GALLIFORMES

Galliformes are heavy-bodied ground-feeding domestic or game birds. Most are plump-bodied with thick necks and moderately long legs, and have rounded and rather short wings. They do not fly well if at all, but walk and run instead for transportation. These birds vary greatly in size from 12-120 cm. Many adult males have one to several sharp horny spurs on the back of each leg, which they use for fighting. They can be found worldwide and in a variety of habitats, including forests, deserts, and meadows. Male courtship behavior includes elaborate visual displays of plumage. Gallinaceous birds feed on a variety of plant and animal material, which may include fruits, seeds, leaves, shoots, flowers, tubers, roots, insects, snails, worms, lizards, snakes, small rodents, and eggs.

Pheasants are characterised by strong sexual dimorphism, males being highly ornate with brightcolours and adornments such as wattles and long tails. Males are usually larger than females and have longer tails. Males play no part in rearing the young. Pheasants typically eat seeds and some insects.

Genus Crossoptilon
The eared pheasants have ear tufts. Eared pheasants move across deep snow by whirring their wings and fluttering close to the ground, and supporting their weight on their tails.

The male Green Junglefowl has an iridescent mantle of gleaming scales. Each scale is vivid blue at its base and moves through various shades of gold and bronzed green. The domesticated chicken has been been derived form the Junglefowl.

None are pure Junglefowl. Junglefowl have gray legs while domestic fowl have golden yellow legs.

The Vietnamese Pheasant is considered by some to be a subspecies of the Edwards's Pheasant.

Genus Pavo

Peafowl, Common also Indian Peafowl also Peacock Pavo cristatus     Found: almost everywhere; native to India
The peacock (male) is predominantly blue with a fan-like crest. He is best known for the long train made up of elongated upper-tail covert feathers which bear colourful eyespots. The peahen (female) lacks the train, has a greenish lower neck and has a duller brown plumage.
Introduced: The Americas, Europe, Asia, Africa, Australasia.
Similar to: Congo Peafowl. Both sexes of Congo Peafowl resemble immature Indian Peafowl.

Peafowl, Green  Pavo muticus  Found: southeast Asia
The sexes of the Green Peafowl are quite similar, especially outside of breeding season. The neck of both sexes is iredescent scaly green. Overall the female has slightly less iridescence and more barring on the back as well as the primaries.

Genus Phasianus - 1 species

The adult male Common Pheasant of the nominate subspecies has a long brown streaked black tail. The body plumage is barred bright gold and brown plumage with green, purple and white markings. The head is green with a small crest, and there is a white neck ring. The female has mottled brown plumage all over. There are many color forms of the male, ranging from nearly white to almost black.. These are due to captive breeding and hybridization.
Similar to: Sharp-tailed Grouse. The female Ring-necked Pheasant and female Sharp-tailed Grouse are similar. The Ring-necked Pheasant has a longer tail.

Genus Polyplectron
Peacock-pheasants are not genetically related to pheasants and only distantly to peafowl. Their closest allies are the Asiatic spurfowl and the crimson-headed partridge, endemic to Borneo. These three genera share the curious tendency for multiple metatarsal spurs. Though they are somewhat divergent morphologically, their skeletons are nearly identical.

The snowcocks are ground-nesting birds that breed in the mountain ranges of southern Eurasia from the Caucasus to the Himalayas and western China. . Snowcocks feed on plants and plant seeds.

Tragopan, Temminck's  Tragopan temminckii  Found: Asia
The male Temminck's Tragopan is a red and orange bird with white spots; black bill; pink legs; light blue facial skin. Female has brown plumage with white spots; blue eye-ring. Found in northeast India, northwest Vietnam, Tibet and northern provinces of China.

Male turkeys have a long, dark, fan-shaped tail and glossy bronze wings. Females have feathers that are duller overall, in shades of brown and gray.
